BC Association of Clinical Counsellors

BCACC REGION 4 WORKSHOP

Using The Intersystem Approach to Understand Family Relationships

Before setting out on a car trip, it is crucially important to find out about weather and road conditions and determine whether one’s car will make it to one’s destination. Assessment is also crucial when it comes to working with our therapeutic clients.  Many psychotherapists and clinicians have developed their own set of assessment methods for their clients. The Intersystem Approach is a type of case formulation. It is an advanced assessment tool developed by Weeks and his colleagues over the past twenty to thirty years. Originally designed for and focused on couples, in this workshop it will be extended to work with families.

The Intersystem Approach allows us to understand our clients at three different levels: the individual system, the interactional system, and the intergenerational system. We can obtain comprehensive, multidimensional and multilayered information from our clients by using a set of guided questions designed for each system. It is especially helpful when working with families from diverse backgrounds and structures.

The Intersystem Approach not only helps us to formulate hypotheses and select the appropriate intervention strategy for our clients, it also allows us to evaluate and adjust our framework as needed throughout the process of counselling. Finally, the Intersystem Approach also helps us improve our awareness of our strengths and weaknesses in our work.  We can overcome our blind spots when formulating treatment plans and interventions with our clients.

Laura Tsang MS, LMFT, has been in private practice in Seattle since early 2000. She specializes in working with couples as well as families. She is also a Certified Sex Therapist and Mediator.   Recently, she has been pursuing her education to become an AAMFT approved supervisor. She is a past student and current supervisee of Dr. Gerald Weeks, one of the originators of the Intersystem Approach.  She is also very involved in working with families in mediation settings. Laura has a diverse background. She is Asian, has been educated and worked in North America for over two decades, and has developed her own unique skills when working with clients. Her passion, genuine work ethic and motivation to learn, have helped her develop a very successful practice with families.
